This spectacular pool was carved out of a rocky ledge on a steep hillside in Glastonbury. The homeowners wanted to maximize both their property’s natural surroundings—and a view of Hartford. So Debbie Madden (pool designer and vice president of Aqua Pool & Patio Inc.) made it happen.
The design developed in stages, says Mike Giannamore, vice president and general manager of this family-owned business; and work progressed that way, too. It was only when the digging began that the entire challenge of building into the outcropping was revealed. In the end, topography ruled the final design, which Giannamore says isn't typical of most installations. Excavated dirt was redeployed at the site to add interest to the landscape and to anchor new plantings. A code-compliant fence is visible in the background. A spa (not visible here) lies adjacent to the free-form chlorinated swimming pool.
Aqua Pool won an award of excellence from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals for the project.
Because pools are such a huge investment, it’s a good idea to look for a pool company that comes recommended. Ask to look at photos, and if possible, actual installations, before deciding on a designer or contractor. While few settings are as dramatic as this one, good design can add to your enjoyment, and ultimately, to property values. “Pools mean family time, quality time,” Giannamore says. This pool means quality design time, too.
