How Long Does It Take to Build a Gunite Pool?
Building a gunite pool is an exciting investment that will transform your outdoor space into a custom oasis. But many homeowners wrestle with a common question: how long will it take? While timelines can vary based on factors like weather, permits, and design complexity, read on to learn more about what to expect at each step of the process.
Average Timeline for Building a Gunite Pool
On average, building a gunite pool takes between 6 to 8 weeks from excavation to completion. However, larger or more elaborate projects may take longer, while simpler builds can sometimes move more quickly—particularly if they’re started during the off-season when demand is lower.
Key Phases of Gunite Pool Construction
Here’s a general breakdown of what to expect at each stage:
- Design and Permitting (1-4 Weeks – or more if demands from Town Hall are significant). Before construction begins, you’ll work with your builder to finalize a custom design and obtain the necessary permits. The exact timeframe for this phase may depend on your town’s permitting process and how quickly decisions are made.
- Excavation (1-2 Days). Once permits are in place, excavation can typically be completed within a day or two. This is when the hole for your pool is dug and prepped for the structure. Unknown underground surprises can delay this step.
- Steel Reinforcement (1-3 Days). A steel rebar framework is installed to shape and strengthen the pool structure. This grid forms the skeleton of your gunite pool.
- Plumbing and Electrical (3-5 Days). Underground plumbing lines and electrical conduits for lighting, automation, or spa features are installed at this stage.
- Gunite Application and Curing (1–2 Days + 7–10 Days Curing). Gunite—a concrete blend—is sprayed and shaped to form your pool shell. It must then cure for about a week while being regularly misted to ensure strength and durability.
- Tile, Coping, and Decking (1–3 Weeks). With the structure in place, crews will then install tile, coping (the pool’s edge), and your chosen decking or patio features. Custom materials and weather may affect timing at this stage.
- Interior Finish and Startup (1 Week). For the final step in the pool construction process, the pool’s interior finish, such as plaster, pebble, or quartz, is applied, and the pool is filled. The system is started up and chemically balanced—and then it’s time to dive in!
What Can Affect the Timeline?
Although most gunite pools can be completed within 6 to 8 weeks, factors such as the following may affect the timeline:
- Weather delays
- Permit processing times
- Scope of custom features
- Material availability and delivery
- Delays caused by other contractors that are beyond our control
