When Should You Close an Inground Pool?
For many pool owners, the changing of the seasons brings a big question: When is the right time to close my inground pool? Closing it too early could mean missing out on those last warm days for swimming, while waiting too long could potentially risk damage from cold weather. The right timing depends on the weather conditions in your area and how you use your pool—but there are a few general guidelines to follow.
The Ideal Timeframe for Closing Your Pool
If you close your pool while the weather is still warm, algae growth may thrive under the cover, leading to cloudy or green water when you reopen in the spring—which can thereby necessitate a more time consuming and maybe more expensive cleanup process. On the other hand, if we get constant (daytime) freezing temperatures before your pool is winterized, water can expand in the pipes and equipment. Depending upon how cold it gets, this may significant damage. Therefore, we recommend closing the pool as late as reasonably possible, but no later than the week after Thanksgiving. For most of our clients, this means closing your pool sometime in late September through October.
Signs That It’s Time to Close Your Pool
In addition to water temperature, here are a few indicators that it’s time to start the closing process:
- You’re no longer using the pool regularly.
- Leaves are falling and debris is getting harder to manage, making pool maintenance more work than it’s worth.
- Daytime temperatures are dipping into the 40s or lower.
*Note: Many clients, even if they’re not using the pool as often, still enjoy having access to the attached spa and the beauty of an uncovered pool. They typically continue to empty baskets and keep the pool clean until the leaves have finished falling, allowing them to enjoy the backyard for its relaxing spa and aesthetic appeal. It’s a lovely time of year to keep the pool and spa open for those who want that option.
